Karate Terminology in Japanese

In Karate, we use all original Japanese terms to name our katas, numbers etc. Here are the some of commonly use terms in Shotokan Karate.

COUNTING:

Ichi – One
Ni – Two
San – Three
Shi, Yon – Four
Go – Five
Roku – Six
Shichi, Nana – Seven
Hachi – Eight
Ku, Kyuu – Nine
Juu – Ten

STANCES:

Dachi – Stance
Musubi-dachi – Attention stance (heels together, toes turned out 45-degrees).
Zenkutsu-dachi – Front stance.
Koukutsu-dachi – Back stance.
Fudou-dachi – Immovable stance.
Kiba-dachi – Horse stance.
Kousa-dachi – X stance/Crossed stance.
Neko-ashi-dachi – Cat stance.
Sanchin-dachi – Hourglass stance, also known as three-point stance.
